Stop Thinking ‘Just Pay Teachers More’ Is the Answer. Build Them Homes.
School districts are building homes for teachers because salary increases just get absorbed by high rents. This non-wage subsidy creates stability but also employer dependency. A land value tax would address the root cause, but political reality makes the paternalist housing model the new normal. The teacher shortage is a housing crisis in disguise.
