The Login Form Is Dead. I Replaced It With a Single Code.

📅 August 8, 2026 📂 AI & Machine Learning

You know the drill. You find a nifty little tool online, you click ‘Get Started,’ and then—bam. A wall of signup forms hits you in the face. ‘Enter your email.’ ‘Create a password.’ ‘Confirm your password.’ ‘Prove you’re not a robot.’ By the time you’re done, you’ve forgotten why you even came to the site.

We’ve normalized building a digital prison just to hand someone a piece of string. Most software assumes you want a long-term relationship. Sometimes, you just want a quick transaction.

I built a link shortener, and I deleted the login screen entirely. You paste a URL, you get your short link, and you’re done. No account, no email, no password. Instead, you get a one-time recovery code, shown once. Lose the link? Come back later, use the code, and get your links back.

The recovery code isn’t a password; it’s a temporary, single-use identity token designed to leave no footprint. It’s a deliberate design choice that prioritizes ephemerality over permanence. It trades the illusion of absolute security for the reality of absolute speed.

Yes, this means if you lose the code, your link is gone. But that’s the point. It’s a breath of fresh air in a login-obsessed web. It strips the tool down to its absolute fundamental purpose: shortening a link. If you want to build a bio page with all your socials, you’ll need a real account for that. But if you just need to shorten a URL, you shouldn’t have to hand over your digital identity to do it.

Friction isn’t a feature. It’s a tax we pay for the illusion of security. The web used to be lightweight. It can be again.

FAQ

Q: What happens if I lose the recovery code?

A: Your link is gone forever. But that's the price of zero-friction. If you need permanence, use a traditional account-based service.

Q: How is this better than Bitly?

A: It’s not 'better'—it’s different. It’s for the 90% of links that don't need analytics or team collaboration. It’s for when you just need a short URL, right now.

Q: Isn't a recovery code just a password by another name?

A: No. A password implies an identity. A recovery code implies a transaction. You don't 'own' the link; you just hold the key to it for a moment.
