Stop Cheering NVIDIA’s ‘Open AI’ Crusade. It’s a Monopoly Trap.

📅 July 27, 2026 📂 AI & Machine Learning

Jensen Huang finally posted on X for the first time. His grand debut wasn’t about gaming, the metaverse, or his latest leather jacket. It was a passionate defense of open access to AI models. The internet collectively cheered. Finally, a tech billionaire standing up to the walled gardens of OpenAI and Google!

But before you crown him the savior of the open-source movement, you need to look at what he’s selling.

We all want AI to be open. We hate the idea of a few mega-corporations locking away the future of intelligence behind expensive API paywalls. So when the charismatic CEO of NVIDIA steps up to advocate for democratization, it feels like a win. But this isn’t a principled stand. This is a billionaire using the language of freedom to sell you shovels.

Jensen Huang doesn’t care if you own the model; he only cares if you need his machines to run it.

Think about the gold rush. You’re panicking because a few massive mining companies are hoarding all the gold. Along comes the guy selling pickaxes, loudly declaring that gold should belong to everyone. He demands the mines be opened. Is he a hero of the people? No. He just wants a massive crowd of prospectors flooding the market, all desperately needing to buy his pickaxes.

That’s NVIDIA’s play. By pushing for open AI models, Huang is ensuring that thousands of startups, researchers, and enterprises will build their own models. And what do you need to train those models? GPUs. NVIDIA’s GPUs. He isn’t advocating for openness to break a monopoly; he’s advocating for openness to feed his own.

Most people are entirely missing the real battlefield. They think the fight is OpenAI’s closed weights versus Meta’s open weights. It’s not. The real battle is over who controls the physical infrastructure layer. And right now, NVIDIA has a hardware lock-in that is far more powerful than any software license could ever be.

Software licenses are temporary. Hardware lock-in is permanent.

While you’re busy celebrating your open-source model weights, you’re still paying a massive tax to NVIDIA to compute them. The CUDA architecture—the software layer that makes NVIDIA chips so dominant—is arguably the most closed, proprietary moat in the entire tech industry today. You can have your “free” AI model, but if you want it to actually do anything, you have to run it on Huang’s proprietary silicon, using his proprietary software stack.

The irony is staggering. A man who controls the most closed ecosystem in tech is using the language of democratization to keep the ecosystem dependent on him. He wants the gold to be free so you have no choice but to buy his infinitely expensive shovels.

You won’t be enslaved by the tyranny of API keys; you’ll be enslaved by the tyranny of silicon.

This matters because the future of AI access won’t be shaped by idealistic debates on Twitter. It will be shaped by the economic incentives of the companies that control the physical infrastructure. NVIDIA’s dominance means their strategy will dictate who can even afford to participate in the AI revolution.

So don’t be fooled by the open-access rhetoric. The next time you see a billionaire advocating for freedom, check what he has in his other hand. Usually, it’s the invoice.

FAQ

Q: Isn't open AI still better than closed AI, even if NVIDIA profits?

A: In the short term, yes. Open models foster innovation. But if the entire ecosystem is funneled through a single hardware provider to run those models, you've just traded a software monopoly for a hardware one.

Q: What's the practical implication for developers?

A: Your model weights might be free, but your compute costs will be dictated by a single company. Your ability to innovate is entirely dependent on NVIDIA's pricing and supply chain.

Q: Is NVIDIA's CUDA moat really unbreakable?

A: Not forever, but right now it's practically cement. Competitors like AMD are trying to break it, but the developer ecosystem is deeply entrenched. Until a viable alternative emerges, Huang's open-access crusade is just a monopoly protection racket.
